KWG: A Closed Civilian Airfield in Ukraine's Active Conflict Zone

Kryvyi Rih International Airport (KWG) is located in central Ukraine, approximately 400 km southeast of Kyiv and 150 km north of the front lines as of 2024. The city — home to one of Europe's largest iron ore mining complexes and birthplace of Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky — sits in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a region that has sustained repeated missile and drone strikes throughout the war. Ukrainian civilian airspace has been fully closed to commercial and private civil aviation since 24 February 2022 under a NOTAM issued by Ukraine's State Aviation Service, and that closure remains in effect with no published restoration date.

Operational Profile

Prior to the war, KWG operated with a single asphalt runway of approximately 2,200m, capable of accommodating midsize jets including the Challenger 350 and Citation Sovereign under standard load conditions. The airport served limited scheduled domestic routes and occasional charter traffic linked to the regional mining and steel sector. Elevation sits at 408 ft AMSL, a non-factor for performance planning. Whether runway infrastructure remains intact is unverified; the facility has not appeared in active NOTAM datasets for civil use since the invasion. Any claim of H24 operations, on-site customs, or FBO availability reflects pre-war status only and cannot be relied upon for planning purposes.

Transfers & Connections

Under peacetime conditions, Kryvyi Rih city centre was reachable in approximately 20–25 minutes from the airport via the M30 highway. The nearest operational civil airports with any wartime activity are outside Ukrainian territory; Budapest (BUD) and Warsaw (WAW) serve as primary staging points for Ukraine-adjacent charter operations requiring EU-side customs clearance. Humanitarian and governmental flights into Ukraine route through designated military corridors only, requiring clearance from Ukrainian authorities and NATO-adjacent coordination. No commercial handler or FBO is currently advertising active KWG operations.

Handling & Customs

Dedicated general aviation handling and customs facilities existed at KWG before February 2022. Their current staffing and physical condition are unknown. Any operator considering a mission into Ukrainian territory must obtain explicit governmental and military clearance — standard PPR processes do not apply in an active conflict zone. Flyius does not route civilian charter flights into Ukraine under the current airspace closure. Clients requiring access to the Dnipro-Kryvyi Rih industrial corridor are advised to stage through Bucharest (OTP) or Vienna (VIE) pending any future restoration of civil access.
