Greece's Easternmost Outpost: The Kastelorizo Airstrip and Its Operational Realities

Kastelorizo — known in Greek as Megisti — sits just 2 kilometres off the Turkish coast near Kaş, making it the most isolated inhabited island in the Aegean. The airstrip designated KZS (LGKJ) is a short, unpaved-to-lightly-paved field carved into the rocky terrain above the harbour, serving a permanent population of under 500. Private jet traffic to Kastelorizo is negligible in volume but operationally demanding: the strip is short, exposed to Meltemi winds in summer, and lacks the infrastructure implied by default database entries.

Strategic Position

Kastelorizo's location places it at the far eastern edge of Greek sovereign airspace, administratively part of the Dodecanese but geographically closer to Antalya than to Rhodes. For clients travelling from the Gulf or connecting from Istanbul, the island represents a niche leisure destination — most famously associated with the Italian film Mediterraneo — rather than a business hub. Onward routing from KZS almost always transits Athens Eleftherios Venizelos or Rhodes Diagoras (RHO), both of which carry full commercial and private jet infrastructure. Greece's general aviation network is administered by HCAA, and slot or PPR requirements at remote Dodecanese airstrips must be confirmed directly with the local aerodrome authority before flight plan submission.

Fleet Compatibility

The runway at Kastelorizo is operationally certified at approximately 570 metres — not 2,200 metres as some databases record. This limits operations strictly to very light piston or turboprop aircraft: think Cessna Caravan, PC-12, or Pilatus in short-field configuration. No jet aircraft in the light, midsize, or heavy category can operate at KZS under any normal payload scenario. Clients requiring jet access to the eastern Dodecanese should plan arrival at Rhodes (RHO, approximately 125 km west) or consider helicopter transfer from a nearby port. Density altitude is not a material concern at 489 ft elevation, but crosswind exposure and strip condition after winter are relevant pre-flight checks for turboprop crews.

FBO & Ground Ops

There is no dedicated FBO at Kastelorizo. Ground handling is basic and seasonal, typically coordinated through the municipal authority. Customs availability is not confirmed as a permanent walk-up service; prior arrangement through the local port authority or HCAA is required, and the database entry of TRUE should be treated as PARTIAL at best. H24 operations are not realistic for an airstrip of this nature — confirm operating hours (typically daylight only, PPR mandatory) with HCAA or a local handling agent before filing. Fuel availability on-island is extremely limited; turboprop operators should plan with full fuel from Split, Rhodes, or another Dodecanese hub. Catering and crew accommodation exist at the village level only — the island has a small number of boutique guesthouses facing the harbour.
