From Ramp to Destination

The airstrip at SOY is located on the western side of the island, approximately 2 kilometres from the village of Whitehall. There are no executive transfer vehicles on-island; clients should arrange collection in advance through local contacts or estate staff. Car hire is not formally available at the airstrip. The road network is single-track throughout the island. Travel time from the airstrip to any point on Stronsay is under 15 minutes by car. For clients arriving from the United Kingdom mainland, the typical routing is a charter or scheduled flight to Kirkwall (KOI) followed by a short positioning leg to SOY — or alternatively, a Loganair inter-island connection for lighter logistics.

The peak period on Stronsay runs from late June through August, when daylight is near-continuous and access by light aircraft is most reliable. The island's cultural festivals in July and August are modest in scale but deeply local in character — not media-facing events, but genuine community gatherings that form part of the fabric of Orcadian island life. Wildlife observation windows open in April and extend through October, with the best grey seal activity concentrated around the Burgh Head peninsula. Archaeological season access is typically coordinated with academic institutions based in Edinburgh or Aberdeen, and private visits to active dig sites require prior liaison.
