Kerch Airport: Eastern Crimea Airfield Under Active Conflict Restrictions

Kerch Airport (KHC) occupies the eastern tip of the Crimean Peninsula, positioned approximately 5 km from the city of Kerch and roughly 5 km from the Kerch Strait — the narrow waterway connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Under normal pre-conflict conditions, the field served as a secondary access point for eastern Crimea, complementing Ukraine's broader general aviation network and occasionally supporting positioning flights between Istanbul and southern Ukrainian destinations.

Operational Profile

Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kerch Airport has been non-operational for civil and private aviation. The airspace over Crimea — including the entire peninsula and adjacent Black Sea and Sea of Azov sectors — is subject to a NOTAM-based closure issued by Ukrainian authorities (Kyiv FIR) and de facto exclusion from ICAO-recognised civil operations. EUROCONTROL does not route civilian traffic through this airspace. No FBO, handling agent, or customs authority is accessible for private jet operations. Any flight planning routing via KHC or UKFK must be treated as operationally infeasible under current conditions.

Transfers & Connections

Prior to the conflict, road transfer from KHC to central Kerch took approximately 15 minutes via standard urban routes. Wider regional access to the Crimean Peninsula required onward surface travel of 1.5 to 3 hours to reach Simferopol or the western coastal resorts. These ground logistics are currently irrelevant given the suspension of civil flight operations. For clients requiring access to southern Ukraine or Black Sea corridor destinations, Odessa and other western Ukrainian fields remain subject to their own wartime NOTAMs and must be individually verified. Pre-conflict data recorded customs on-site and a handling capability at KHC, consistent with a field that served occasional charter and government traffic. These records reflect conditions prior to February 2022 and carry no current operational validity. No independent FBO operator is known to be active at Kerch Airport. Ground handling, fuel availability, customs clearance, and crew facilities cannot be confirmed.
