Chernivtsi International Airport (CWC) sits in the far southwest of Ukraine, roughly 40 km from the Romanian border near Suceava. In peacetime, the field served as a regional hub for western Ukraine's most architecturally preserved city — a UNESCO-listed historic centre and a significant academic and cultural hub. However, since February 2022, Ukraine's airspace has been closed to civil aviation following Russia's full-scale invasion, and Ukraine remains under active wartime airspace restrictions. No scheduled or charter civil flights are currently operating at CWC under normal commercial arrangements.

Operational Profile Under Wartime Restrictions

The operational_status of CWC must be treated as restricted until the Ukrainian Civil Aviation Authority formally reopens the national airspace to civil traffic. Prior to February 24, 2022, CWC operated with a 2,200m paved runway (orientation 12/30), sufficient for light to midsize jets including the Challenger 350 and Citation XLS+ under standard payload configurations. Elevation stands at 826 ft above sea level, presenting no meaningful density altitude considerations. The airport had established on-site customs and a general aviation handling facility, though dedicated FBO infrastructure of the type found at Prague or Budapest was not present. Any future resumption of operations will require confirmation of airspace NOTAM status, slot coordination with Ukrainian authorities, and overflight permissions through adjacent Romanian and Moldovan FIRs.

Transfers and Connections — Pre-War Reference

Chernivtsi city centre lies approximately 15 km northeast of the airport, reachable in 20–25 minutes by road via the M19 highway. The nearest alternative entry point into the western Ukrainian region, under current conditions, is via road or rail from Bucharest Henri Coandă in Romania, approximately 200 km south, which remains fully operational for international private aviation. The border crossing at Porubne–Siret is the closest vehicle transit point for ground-based crew and passenger movements.

Handling and Customs — Pre-War Reference

Before the airspace closure, CWC offered on-site customs clearance with advance coordination through the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine. Handling was provided through Ukraine International Airlines ground services infrastructure — no internationally branded FBO (Signature, Jetex, or equivalent) was established at the field. Catering and VIP ground transport required advance arrangement through local handlers. Any future operational planning for CWC should begin with a current NOTAM review and direct coordination with Ukrainian CAA and the relevant handling agent, as all pre-war service agreements may no longer be valid.
