Odessa on the Black Sea: Airfield Under Active Wartime Airspace Closure

Odessa International Airport has been closed to civilian commercial and charter operations since February 24, 2022, following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the imposition of a wartime airspace closure (NOTAM covering all Ukrainian FIR). The airport itself — positioned 8 km south-west of Odessa city centre, near the Black Sea coast — had previously served as a significant charter hub for yacht traffic, summer leisure flights from Western Europe, and business aviation serving the port's commodities sector. None of those operations are currently accessible to civil operators.

Strategic Position

Odessa sits at the intersection of the Danube Delta corridor and Black Sea maritime routes, approximately 490 km south-west of Kyiv and 300 km north of the Turkish Strait. Prior to the conflict, it served as a natural tech-stop point between Istanbul and Central European hubs such as Budapest, and attracted Gulf-originating traffic bound for the Ukrainian agricultural sector. The airport infrastructure includes two runways — the primary measuring approximately 2,800m (09/27) and a secondary at around 2,200m — though all figures should be cross-referenced against current NOTAM data before any future resumption planning.

Fleet Compatibility

Before closure, the primary runway's length was sufficient to accommodate super-midsize and heavy-category aircraft including the Challenger 604, Gulfstream G450, and Falcon 7X on transatlantic-range operations without fuel penalty. The field elevation of 172 ft above sea level imposes no density altitude consideration for any aircraft category. However, no payload or performance data should be relied upon for operational planning while the airport remains closed and potential infrastructure damage from the ongoing conflict is unassessed.

Prior to February 2022, Odessa had general aviation handling facilities with on-site customs and documented FBO-style services for business aviation.
