A Destroyed Airfield in an Active Conflict Zone — No Civil Access Since 2014

Operational Profile

Donetsk International Airport is not operational. The facility was completely destroyed between 2014 and 2015 during sustained combat operations in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. The terminal buildings, control tower, and runway infrastructure were all rendered unusable during fighting between Ukrainian armed forces and Russian-backed separatists. As of 2024, the surrounding area remains under active occupation and within a designated conflict zone. No civil, commercial, or private aviation movements are possible. Any data suggesting H24 operations, customs availability, or FBO presence at DOK reflects pre-2014 conditions and has no operational relevance today.

Transfers & Connections

There is no viable ground transfer from Donetsk Airport. The city of Donetsk itself is outside Ukrainian government control, under partial occupation, and remains subject to ongoing military operations. Flight planning to the Donetsk Oblast is not feasible through any legitimate private charter operator. For eastern Ukraine destinations accessible to civil aviation, the nearest functional alternatives prior to the broader 2022 Russian invasion were Dnipro and Kharkiv, though both have also been subject to significant operational restrictions following the February 2022 full-scale invasion. Ukraine's airspace has been closed to civil aviation since 24 February 2022 under NOTAM restrictions, affecting all airports in the country including those under Ukrainian government control.

Handling & Customs

No FBO, handling agent, or customs function is available at DOK. The physical infrastructure no longer exists. For private aviation access to Ukraine once airspace restrictions are lifted, the principal operational hub is Kyiv Boryspil, which historically offered full customs clearance, multiple FBO-level handlers, and runway infrastructure capable of accommodating heavy-cabin jets. Routing via Warsaw (WAW) or Budapest (BUD) is the standard positioning strategy for operators planning future access to Ukraine pending airspace reopening.
