Mariupol's Airport on the Azov Coast: Closed Since the 2022 Siege

Mariupol International Airport ceased all civil and commercial operations in February–March 2022, when the city became the site of one of the most devastating urban battles of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The airfield at UKCM, located approximately 6 km west of the city centre on the northern shore of the Azov Sea, sustained significant damage during the siege and has not conducted any civil aviation movements since. No FBO services, customs clearance, or ground handling are available, and the airspace above Mariupol remains under active conflict-zone restrictions.

Operational Profile

Prior to the conflict, MPW operated a single asphalt runway of approximately 2,500m, supporting narrowbody commercial and light charter traffic primarily to Kyiv, Istanbul, and seasonal leisure destinations. All scheduled and charter operations ceased in Q1 2022. The airport infrastructure, including the terminal building and ramp, was heavily damaged. Ukrainian and international aviation authorities classify the airfield as non-operational. No NOTAM authorises civil access, and the surrounding airspace is subject to ICAO conflict-zone advisories affecting all flights below FL260 in eastern Ukraine.

Transfers & Connections

For operations requiring access to southeastern Ukraine or the Azov region, operators and dispatchers should assess routing via western Ukrainian airports that remain under Ukrainian airspace authority. Ukraine continues to host operational airports in its western regions, though all eastern fields, including Zaporizhzhia (OZH), Dnipro (DNK), and Mariupol (MPW), have been closed to civil traffic since 2022. Positioning flights into Kyiv-area airports or coordinating ground logistics from Poland or Romania represent the only viable alternatives for missions requiring proximity to southern Ukraine.

Handling & Customs

No FBO, handling agent, or customs facility is currently operational at Mariupol International. Pre-conflict, the airport featured on-site customs and a dedicated general aviation handling area. These services are suspended indefinitely. For private jet missions requiring Ukrainian entry points, Prague and Warsaw Chopin serve as common staging bases for humanitarian and diplomatic flights coordinating onward surface transport into Ukraine. Any flight planning touching Ukrainian airspace must comply with current EASA and national authority safety assessments before departure.
