Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov: An Airfield Under Wartime Suspension

Berdyansk Airport (ERD) served the port city of Berdyansk on Ukraine's northeastern Sea of Azov coastline before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The city itself was occupied by Russian forces in the early days of the conflict, and all civil aviation operations at UKDB have been suspended since that date. The Ukrainian Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) framework, combined with active hostilities across southern Ukraine, makes any civil flight to or from Berdyansk operationally impossible under current conditions.

Operational Profile

Prior to the conflict, ERD operated a 2,200-metre paved runway at an elevation of approximately 171 ft above sea level, theoretically capable of handling light-to-midsize jets including the Phenom 300 and Citation XLS+. On-site customs and general aviation handling were available. As of the date of this publication, none of these services are accessible. The airfield falls within restricted Ukrainian airspace zones that encompass all territories under or near active frontline conditions. No FBO or handling operator is active at UKDB.

Prior to 2022, road transfer from Berdyansk to Zaporizhzhia was approximately 200 km via the M14 highway. The nearest airports in unoccupied Ukrainian territory currently accessible to civil aviation are significantly farther west. Operators routing to Ukraine for humanitarian, governmental, or reconstruction-related missions should coordinate via the Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise (UkSATSE) and consult current NOTAM restrictions before any planning. For verified operational access to the broader region, Ukraine routing options are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Alternative regional hubs include Istanbul as a staging point for permitted missions into western Ukraine, or Bucharest for border-adjacent coordination.
