Zaporizhzhia Airport: Suspended Operations in an Active Conflict Zone

Zaporizhzhia International Airport (ICAO: UKDE) served as the primary civil aviation gateway to Ukraine's industrial southeast, a region historically anchored by metallurgy, aerospace manufacturing, and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant — Europe's largest. Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the airport has been closed to all civil and commercial aviation. Ukrainian airspace (UKXX FIR) remains subject to a NOTAM-based closure for civil flights, with active air defence operations across southern and eastern Ukraine rendering any approach to OZH operationally impossible and legally prohibited under current ICAO advisories.

Prior to February 2022, OZH operated a single asphalt runway of approximately 2,500 metres, capable of handling midsize to super-midsize jets and narrow-body commercial aircraft. The airfield sits at an elevation of 373 ft AMSL on flat steppe terrain, with no topographic constraints on approach paths. Ground handling was provided through the airport's own handling unit; a dedicated western-standard FBO was not established at this facility. Customs and border control were available during scheduled operating hours, not on a 24-hour basis.

For operators requiring access to central or western Ukraine — Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro — during periods when Ukrainian airspace partially reopens for humanitarian or government missions, coordination must occur through Ukrainian state authorities and NATO airspace managers. No general aviation or charter movements are currently authorised into OZH or any eastern Ukrainian airfield. Ukraine as a destination remains subject to blanket overflight and landing restrictions for civil operators registered in most European states.

Clients with legitimate mission requirements in western Ukraine may consider Prague or Budapest as staging points for onward surface transit, depending on mission profile and border crossing availability. All flight planning into Ukrainian airspace requires current NOTAMs, state-level PPR, and coordination with the relevant national aviation authority. The situation on the ground in Zaporizhzhia oblast remains fluid; airfield infrastructure may have sustained damage and no independent assessment of runway condition is currently available.
