Central Ukraine's Dnieper Corridor Field Under Active Airspace Restrictions

Cherkasy International Airport (CKC / UKKE) is located approximately 3 km from the city of Cherkasy, on the right bank of the Dnieper River in central Ukraine. Under normal peacetime conditions, the field operated with a 2,200m asphalt runway capable of accepting light-to-midsize jets including the Citation XLS+ and Learjet 75 family, on-site customs, and general aviation handling. However, since February 2022, Ukraine has closed its airspace to civil aviation following Russia's full-scale military invasion. No commercial or private charter flights are legally or practically schedulable to CKC at this time.

Operational Profile

Prior to the airspace closure, CKC operated under standard Ukrainian CAA oversight. The runway — 2,200m at 375 ft elevation — posed no density altitude constraints for any jet category. Instrument approaches were available, and on-site customs covered international arrivals under UKKE's bilateral clearance framework. H24 operations were declared, though in practice overnight movements were limited and required advance coordination with local ATC. No internationally branded FBO operated at Cherkasy; handling was managed through local Ukrainian ground service providers. Slot requirements were minimal given low traffic volumes.

Transfers & Connections

Cherkasy city centre lies approximately 5–7 km from the terminal, with transfer times of 10–15 minutes by road under normal conditions. The Kyiv-Cherkasy highway (P04) connects the oblast capital to Prague-bound or Central European routing via Boryspil or Kyiv Sikorsky. In peacetime, Cherkasy served primarily as an intra-Ukrainian feeder point and occasional tech stop for eastbound regional traffic. Positioning flights from Budapest or Warsaw were the typical Western European origin for operators serving central Ukrainian business clients in the agro-industrial and chemical sectors that define the Cherkasy regional economy.

Handling & Customs

Pre-conflict handling at CKC was classified as standard-to-basic, delivered by the airport's own ground services division without a dedicated FBO facility. Customs were available on-site for international general aviation, though documentation requirements under Ukrainian regulations — including prior notification to the State Border Guard Service — applied to all private arrivals. Fuel availability (TS-1 jet fuel) was confirmed through the airport operator, with Jet-A1 requiring advance arrangement. Any operator considering future operations to CKC once airspace reopens should plan for full PPR, customs pre-notification, and overflight permit coordination across neighbouring FIRs.
