The trade-off is narrow: steep approach, short field, weight limitations.

Runway & Performance

The single asphalt runway 09/27 measures 1,508 metres with a mandatory 5.5-degree ILS glidepath — the steepest instrument approach in the UK and one of the steepest at any commercial aerodrome in Europe. This geometry limits LCY to aircraft certified for steep approaches: Phenom 300, Citation CJ series, Pilatus PC-24, Learjet 75, and select Embraer Legacy 450/500 configurations. The Challenger 350 and any widebody heavy are operationally excluded. MTOW limits further constrain payload on warmer days; crews routinely burn fuel to comply with MLW. Elevation sits at 19 ft AMSL — density altitude is a non-factor in any season.

Block-out time must account for this window; late-running transatlantic positioning can force a divert to Le Bourget or Biggin Hill for overnight parking. Slot coordination is mandatory — LCY is slot-controlled under IATA schedules and slots must be confirmed well in advance of departure, particularly during peak City calendar weeks (results seasons, IPO roadshows, IMF/World Bank cycles).

For operators serving the wider United Kingdom financial ecosystem, LCY sits within the M25 corridor but is poorly connected by road during peak hours; the DLR remains the preferred routing for Canary Wharf and City clientele. Greenwich, Stratford, and ExCeL London (major conference venue) are all within 15 minutes by rail.
