South Yorkshire's Former Jet Gateway — Now Closed to All Operations

Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport ceased all operations on 4 November 2022 following the collapse of its parent company Peel Group's aviation division. Despite holding planning permission for a major terminal expansion and serving as the primary airport for South Yorkshire and the East Midlands corridor, DSA closed permanently with no scheduled reopening date confirmed at the time of writing. The runway — a 2,195-metre strip capable in operational days of accommodating midsize jets including the Challenger 350 and Citation XLS+ — sits unused. All ground handling, customs, and FBO services previously available on-site have been suspended indefinitely.

Operational Profile

Prior to closure, DSA operated with on-site UK Border Force customs clearance and a dedicated general aviation handling facility. The airfield sat at approximately 55 ft elevation in flat South Yorkshire terrain, meaning density altitude was never a limiting factor for any aircraft type. H24 operations were available subject to prior arrangement. In active years, the airport served charter and cargo traffic alongside scheduled low-cost carriers, with Jet2 and Wizz Air as primary commercial tenants. Private movements were handled through the general aviation apron on the eastern side of the airfield.

Doncaster city centre lies approximately 5 km from the airfield — roughly 10 minutes by road via the A638. Sheffield city centre is accessible in approximately 35–40 minutes via the M18 and M1. Leeds is roughly 45 minutes north. For operators requiring an active South Yorkshire gateway, Manchester Airport (MAN) is the nearest major alternative at approximately 75 km west, with full FBO infrastructure and H24 customs. Leeds Bradford Airport also provides regional access for lighter charter movements, while Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) serves as a common positioning hub for transatlantic-connecting itineraries into the region. Operators routing into the United Kingdom should note that EGCN is not currently accepting any aircraft movements.

As of the November 2022 closure, no FBO, handling agent, or customs service is available at EGCN. Any legacy NOTAMs or database entries listing DSA as active should be treated as outdated. Flight planners and dispatchers should remove DSA from active alternate lists for UK routing until a verified reopening is confirmed through official CAA channels. The closest operational fields with full private jet infrastructure in the region include Manchester (MAN) to the west and Humberside Airport (HUY) to the northeast, approximately 60 km away.
