Berlin-Tegel: Germany's Shuttered Capital Airfield and the Pivot to Brandenburg

Berlin-Tegel Airport closed permanently on 8 November 2020, four days after Berlin Brandenburg International (BER) opened to commercial and general aviation traffic. The closure ended 58 years of operations at EDDT and consolidated all Berlin air traffic — including private charter — into a single hub at Schönefeld. Any routing that previously used TXL must now be replanned via Frankfurt am Main for staging or direct into BER.

Operational Profile

EDDT is no longer a viable landing option for any category of civil aircraft. The site has been repurposed as a planned urban development zone under the Berlin Senate's Urban Tech Republic project. There is no active FBO, no customs facility, no fuel supply, and no ATC service. Flight planners should remove TXL from any active route database and substitute EDDB (Berlin Brandenburg) for all Berlin-bound charters.

Transfers & Connections

Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is located approximately 24 km southeast of Berlin's city centre, accessible via the A113 motorway or direct S-Bahn rail link to Hauptbahnhof in under 30 minutes. For clients previously using Tegel for its proximity to Charlottenburg or Mitte — roughly 8 km from the former terminal — the additional transfer time via BER must be factored into block-in scheduling. Helicopter transfers between BER and central Berlin helipads remain an option for time-critical movements.

Handling & Customs

All private jet handling, customs clearance, and FBO services for Germany Berlin operations are now consolidated at BER, where Hamann Aviation and other handlers operate dedicated general aviation facilities on the south apron. Customs at BER operate on standard EU entry procedures. Operators who previously held Tegel PPR slots or had standing arrangements with the former Jet Aviation Berlin facility should re-establish ground handling contracts at BER well in advance of the first movement. For alternative German business aviation hubs, Hamburg and Düsseldorf remain fully operational with premium FBO infrastructure.
