The airport underwent a comprehensive terminal expansion ahead of the 2015 European Games and has been operating its dedicated international infrastructure since, positioning it as the most capable airfield in the South Caucasus for private and business aviation.

The primary runway (18/36) extends approximately 3,000 metres, cleared for wide-body and ultra-long-range operations. A Gulfstream G650 or Global 7500 can depart Baku direct to London, Paris, or Dubai without restriction under standard ISA conditions — the field elevation near sea level (approximately 10 ft) removes any density altitude concern across all seasons. Slot coordination is required for peak periods, particularly during major state events and SOCAR-related corporate travel peaks in Q4. PPR is advisable for positioning flights arriving outside of the main bank. Operating hours are effectively H24 in practice, though official confirmation of late-night handling windows should be obtained through the ground handler prior to scheduling block-in times after 01:00 local.

The transfer corridor from GYD to Baku's central business district — the White City development zone and the Flame Towers area — runs approximately 25–30 minutes via the Heydar Aliyev Avenue motorway under normal traffic conditions. During morning peak hours (07:30–09:00) the journey can extend to 45 minutes. For passengers connecting onward into the Caspian region, GYD serves as the practical tech stop for routes continuing to Ashgabat, Aktau, or Tbilisi. Azerbaijan does not operate a secondary executive-focused airfield in Baku, making GYD the sole option for international private movements in the capital. Helicopter transfers to offshore Caspian platforms are coordinated through separate charter arrangements not handled at the commercial terminal.

Handling & Customs

Customs and border control are available on-site at GYD, staffed H24 for scheduled operations. For non-scheduled private arrivals outside standard banking hours, customs availability should be confirmed in advance through the local handler — walk-up clearance at 02:00 is not guaranteed without pre-notification. The primary general aviation handler at GYD is Silk Way Business Aviation, which operates a dedicated VIP terminal on the southern apron with direct ramp access, crew facilities, and catering coordination. A secondary handling option is available through Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) Ground Handling for operators not contracted with Silk Way.
