Svolvær Helle Airport (SVJ) is the sole public-access fixed-wing airfield serving the Lofoten Islands, one of Norway's most geographically distinctive regions. The archipelago sits above the Arctic Circle, and SVJ functions as the aviation choke point for all inbound executive traffic — whether for the fishing season, the Northern Lights window (October–March), or high-end wilderness lodge access. There is no road alternative from the Norwegian mainland without a multi-hour ferry, making SVJ operationally non-negotiable for time-sensitive itineraries.

The runway at SVJ measures approximately 1,049 metres, which categorically restricts operations to turboprop aircraft and VLJ-class jets at maximum. The Beechcraft King Air series, Pilatus PC-12, and Twin Otter are the standard platforms for this field. Light jets such as the Phenom 100 or Citation Mustang may be considered depending on payload and weather conditions, but should be confirmed with performance analysis before dispatch. Heavier platforms including the Phenom 300 or any midsize jet are not compatible with this runway. Positioning a turboprop from Oslo Gardermoen or a Scandinavian hub with a connection to SVJ is the standard routing for UHNWI clients arriving in larger cabin aircraft. The airfield elevation of 27 ft means density altitude is a non-factor in aircraft performance calculations.

Transfers & Connections

Svolvær town centre is approximately 3 km from the terminal, reachable in under 10 minutes by road. The E10 highway is the primary surface artery connecting the Lofoten Islands along their length — transfers to Å, Reine, or Henningsvær require 30 to 90 minutes of driving depending on destination. Helicopter access is available for clients requiring direct lodge or vessel transfers not accessible by road; several operators in northern Norway provide charter rotary services out of SVJ. There is no rail link to Svolvær.

Handling & Customs

SVJ is operated by Avinor, the Norwegian state airport operator, which manages general aviation handling at most regional fields in the country. Dedicated FBO infrastructure in the private aviation sense is not confirmed at SVJ — general aviation handling is provided but at a regional-service level. Customs clearance requires prior arrangement and is not available on a walk-up basis; international charter arrivals must coordinate customs through Norwegian Border Control well in advance of arrival.
