Narita Airport is not Tokyo's most convenient field — that would be Haneda — but it is Japan's highest-capacity international hub, purpose-built in 1978 to absorb intercontinental traffic that Haneda could no longer handle. Both runways — 16R/34L at 4,000m and 16L/34R at 4,000m — are equipped with ILS CAT II/III approaches, enabling reliable operations in NRT's periodic winter fog and low-visibility conditions. Transfers & Connections

The transfer challenge at Narita is well-documented: central Tokyo is 60 to 75 minutes by road under normal conditions, or approximately 53 minutes via the Narita Express (N'EX) to Shinjuku. For passengers whose final destination is the Tokyo CBD, Marunouchi, or Roppongi, the ground transfer time is a genuine operational consideration — particularly against the option of routing through Haneda (HND), which sits 20 km from central Tokyo. However, for travel to Chiba Prefecture, Makuhari Messe (15 minutes from NRT), or onward connections to domestic Japanese routes, Narita's positioning is efficient. The Tomei and Chuo expressways connect via the Ken-O Expressway, providing direct routing toward Yokohama and Kanagawa Prefecture without transiting the capital.
