That ownership structure shapes almost everything about flying here — from the open-air, garden-pavilion terminal that replaces the usual concrete arrivals hall, to the landing fees and handling charges that run above the Thai average, to the daylight-only operating hours that rule out night arrivals or departures entirely.

The 2,060-metre runway sets the practical envelope for private traffic: turboprops, light jets and midsize jets operate here without difficulty, and together they make up the great majority of movements. Heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft are a different matter — the field cannot comfortably support them, and the established workaround is to land on the mainland at Surat Thani and cover the final leg to the island by helicopter or ferry. Demand at USM is almost entirely leisure-driven. Villa owners and guests of the island's marquee resort properties — the Four Seasons and Banyan Tree foremost among them — generate the bulk of private movements, and the beach corridors of Chaweng and Bophut sit just 10 to 20 minutes from the ramp. Feeder connections are short and regional rather than long-haul: Bangkok in under an hour, with Singapore, Hong Kong and Phuket all within easy range for a light or midsize jet.

Seasonality drives the calendar more visibly here than at most Asian destinations. The December-to-April dry season delivers the best flying weather and the heaviest private traffic, a second demand surge follows in July and August, and the October–November monsoon brings the year's heaviest rain — exactly the stretch where the airport's lack of night operations leaves the least room to absorb a weather delay. Building extra schedule buffer into shoulder-season trips is the single most useful piece of planning advice for this airport.
