Mariupol, a port city on the Sea of Azov in eastern Ukraine, was a regional industrial and commercial hub before February 2022, home to Metinvest's Azovstal steel plant and Ilyich Iron & Steel Works — two of the largest metallurgical complexes in Europe. The city had a pre-war population of approximately 430,000 and served as the primary gateway for business aviation into the Donetsk region.

Following the full-scale Russian invasion launched in February 2022, Mariupol became one of the most devastated urban centers of the conflict. The airport infrastructure was destroyed during sustained military operations in March–April 2022. The city fell under Russian military occupation in May 2022, and the entire civilian and commercial aviation ecosystem ceased to exist. Airspace over Mariupol and the surrounding region is fully closed to civil aviation.

For travel to southeastern Ukraine or business connectivity to the broader region, the nearest operational airports are Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro, both of which have been used for humanitarian and limited business flights subject to active wartime airspace restrictions. Any routing into Ukraine requires current NOTAM review and coordination with Ukrainian airspace authorities.
