Runway Analysis

The runway at MFX is a sloped STOL strip — not a conventional sealed runway. Published length is approximately 518 metres on a gradient of around 13%, used for one-directional uphill landings and downhill departures only. This is not a 406-metre paved field: the operational reality is that only STOL-certified aircraft may use it, principally the Pilatus PC-6 and Twin Otter variants operated by specialist mountain aviation operators. Standard light jets, midsize, and heavy cabin aircraft are categorically excluded from MFX. Operators routing UHNWI clients to Méribel must plan on a valley airport — Geneva (GVA) or Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS) — followed by a dedicated ground transfer or helicopter positioning. Density altitude at MFX during peak season (January–March) is a live performance factor: ISA deviation on a sunny March afternoon can meaningfully reduce STOL aircraft useful load, requiring fuel and payload planning even for PC-6 operations.

Operational Profile

MFX operates seasonally, typically mid-December through mid-April, aligned with the Méribel ski season. There are no year-round operations and no H24 access: the strip closes at end of season and operates on daylight-only hours during winter. Slots and PPR are mandatory — operations cannot be arranged ad hoc. Customs clearance is available by prior arrangement, not on a walk-up basis; international arrivals require advance coordination with French customs (DGDDI) through the handling agent. The absence of an independent FBO means ground services — catering, crew logistics, ramp coordination — are handled through the seasonal operator on-site rather than a dedicated fixed-base facility. Clients arriving on STOL charters should confirm catering and luggage transfer arrangements 48 hours prior, as ramp capacity and staff are limited by the site's physical constraints.

Transfers & Connections

For crews routing passengers who cannot land at MFX itself, the standard alternatives are Geneva Cointrin (approximately 2.5–3 hours by road in peak season) and Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport (roughly 75–90 minutes). Helicopter transfers from Geneva to Méribel are available through specialist Alpine operators and represent the premium routing for heavy-jet passengers: Geneva arrival, helicopter positioning to Méribel helipad, door-to-chalet. Grenoble Alpes Isère is a further option at approximately 90 minutes by road. For clients based in France, Paris Le Bourget to Chambéry followed by road is the most common mid-week corporate routing. Parking at valley airports during peak January and February weekends is constrained — coordinate overnight tie-down well in advance.
