The runway at Bildudalur is a short gravel strip of approximately 900 metres, suitable exclusively for VLJ-class and small single or twin turboprop aircraft — think Cessna Caravan, Twin Otter, or Beechcraft King Air. The claim that this field operates a 2,200m paved runway is inconsistent with all available aeronautical and satellite data; dispatch should treat that figure with caution and verify via current AFIS or AIP Iceland before any positioning flight. Elevation sits at 18 ft AMSL, so density altitude is not a planning factor. However, the fjord topography creates significant terrain constraints on approach and departure — crew unfamiliar with mountain flying in marginal visibility should review the published procedures carefully and consider local familiarisation. Operations are daylight-dependent and subject to seasonal limitations; H24 clearance should not be assumed without direct confirmation from the local AFIS service.

Transfers & Connections

Bildudalur village itself offers minimal ground infrastructure. The nearest significant town is Patreksfjörður, roughly 30 km by road. For clients requiring onward connectivity to Reykjavik or international departure from Iceland, the practical routing is a short turboprop hop to Reykjavik Domestic (RKV) followed by connection at Keflavik (KEF). There is no customs facility on site; international arrivals must be planned through a customs-designated aerodrome. Ísafjörður Airport (IFJ), approximately 80 km north by air, holds customs clearance capability on a prior-arrangement basis and is the regional hub for the Westfjords if larger aircraft or international entry is required.

Handling & Customs

There is no dedicated FBO at Bildudalur. Ground handling is provided through Icelandic regional aviation operators under contract to Eagle Air or similar scheduled carriers serving the Westfjords routes. Fuel availability on-site is limited and should be confirmed well in advance for any non-scheduled positioning. Customs clearance is not available at BIU — operators must plan international entry or exit through Keflavik International (KEF) or another designated customs aerodrome. For any executive charter mission into the Westfjords, the operationally sound approach is to clear customs at KEF or Akureyri, then position a turboprop into BIU for the final leg.
