Inishmaan — An Inis Meáin in Irish — sits in the middle of the three Aran Islands, roughly 30 km off the coast of County Clare in Galway Bay. The aerodrome is a grass and compacted-surface strip operated primarily by Aer Arann Islands (now trading as Inis Mór Airlines / the Aran Islands service) linking the island with Connemara Regional Airport at Inverin. Private jet access to IIA is structurally constrained: the usable strip length is approximately 540 metres, limiting operations strictly to very light single- and twin-engine piston aircraft and the smallest turboprops. No business jet category — from VLJ upward — can use this field. The data indicating a 2,200 m runway, H24 customs, premium FBO, and on-site customs should be treated as placeholder defaults; none of these apply to Inishmaan Aerodrome in any operational sense.

Operational Profile

The strip at IIA sits at approximately 15 ft AMSL on the island's relatively flat limestone plateau. Operations are conducted under VFR only, and the aerodrome has no instrument approach procedures. Scheduled service is limited to the island air link, currently operated in coordination with Connacht Ireland regional transport policy. There is no published IFR procedure, no instrument lighting, and no all-weather capability. Departures and arrivals are entirely weather-dependent; Atlantic fog, low visibility, and crosswinds from the southwest are routine seasonal constraints. Scheduling any aircraft movement — even a light piston — requires prior permission (PPR) from the aerodrome management and coordination with the local island authority. H24 operations do not exist; the strip is effectively available during daylight hours only and subject to island administrative hours.

Transfers & Connections

There is no road access off the island. Onward movement from Inishmaan requires either the local air link to Inverin (Connemara Regional Airport, approximately 10 minutes' flying time) or the ferry service to Ros a' Mhíl (Rossaveel) in County Galway, with crossing times of approximately 40–50 minutes depending on conditions. The nearest private jet-capable airport with instrument approaches and hard-surface runways is Dublin Airport (DUB) — approximately 230 km east — or Ireland West Airport Knock, roughly 100 km to the north. For Atlantic-routing private operations targeting the west of Ireland, Dublin or Shannon (SNN) are the practical entry points, with surface or helicopter transfer to the Aran Islands thereafter.

Handling & Customs

There is no customs facility at Inishmaan Aerodrome. International arrivals — including those from non-Irish EU points — cannot clear customs at IIA. Any international private aircraft wishing to land in Ireland must clear at a designated customs aerodrome; the nearest practical options are Shannon, Dublin, or Galway Airport. No FBO exists at IIA. Ground handling is limited to the basic support available through the island air service operator. Fuel is not available at the aerodrome. Aircraft requiring fuel must plan accordingly; positioning flights to IIA from a fuelled base are the only viable model for light aircraft operations. Handling quality is basic by any operational metric.
