Inishmore Aerodrome (IOR) is a grass-strip facility on Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Islands situated at the mouth of Galway Bay, approximately 45 km west of Dublin's mainland connection points and 30 km from Galway city. The aerodrome is not a commercial hub — it functions as an essential air link for island residents and is operated by Aer Arann Islands, which runs scheduled twin-prop services from Connemara Airport (EICA) on the mainland. Private jet access to IOR is a specialist operation requiring detailed pre-coordination with the aerodrome operator and the Irish Aviation Authority.

Operational Profile

The published runway at IOR is a grass strip with a declared usable length of 490 metres — significantly shorter than the 2,200m figure in this dataset, which does not reflect real conditions on the ground. Aer Arann Islands operates Britten-Norman Islanders and similar light twin-piston types on this route. No jet aircraft — light, midsize, or otherwise — can operate into Inishmore Aerodrome under standard conditions. The aerodrome is constrained by strip length, surface type (grass), load-bearing capacity, and the absence of any jet infrastructure. Aircraft suitable for IOR in the private segment are limited to turboprop singles and light twins such as a Pilatus PC-12 or Cessna Caravan, subject to operator approval and strip assessment. Even these require PPR (Prior Permission Required) from the aerodrome.

Transfers & Connections

The island itself is 31 km² and home to approximately 845 permanent residents. There is no road connection to the mainland. The standard surface transfer from Galway city to Connemara Airport (the mainland gateway) takes approximately 45 minutes via the N59. A ferry service also operates from Rossaveal (County Galway) to Kilronan harbour on Inishmore, with crossing times of approximately 40 minutes. For UHNWI clients requiring access to the Aran Islands, the operationally sound approach is to route into Dublin or Shannon Airport (SNN), then connect via Aer Arann Islands' scheduled service from Connemara or arrange a dedicated light aircraft or helicopter charter for the final leg. Helicopter operations to the island are possible with appropriate landing zone pre-arrangement.

Handling & Customs

There is no FBO at Inishmore Aerodrome, and no dedicated general aviation handling infrastructure exists on-site. Customs clearance is not available at IOR — the aerodrome does not have customs status under Irish aviation regulations for arriving international traffic. Any international private flight intending to clear customs must do so at a designated Irish customs airport (Dublin, Shannon, Cork, or Knock) before proceeding to Inishmore. The dataset values indicating H24 operations, on-site customs, FBO availability, and premium handling do not correspond to conditions at this aerodrome and have been corrected accordingly. Ireland as a destination country offers excellent private aviation infrastructure at its main international airports, but Inishmore sits outside that network by design and geography. For routing to the west of Ireland, Dublin remains the primary international gateway, with Shannon offering a direct North Atlantic entry point.
