Karpathos sits roughly midway between Rhodes and Crete, separated from the nearest commercial hub by 70 nautical miles of open Aegean water. For charter clients targeting the island's northern villages — Olympos, Diafani — or its largely undeveloped western coastline, AOK is the only viable inbound option. There is no ferry connection fast enough to compete with a 25-minute ramp-to-beach transfer.

AOK occupies a narrow coastal shelf on the island's eastern side, approximately 14 km south of Karpathos town (Pigadia). The field sits at 66 ft elevation, with no density altitude considerations for any aircraft type. The island's position on the Rhodes-Crete corridor makes it a natural waypoint for Aegean island-hopping itineraries operating out of Athens Eleftherios Venizelos or Istanbul. Eastbound routing toward Cyprus or the Levant is also feasible as a positioning sector.

Fleet Compatibility

The published runway at AOK is approximately 1,560 metres of asphalt — sufficient for light jets including the Phenom 300, Citation CJ3+, and Pilatus PC-24, but operationally limiting for midsize and larger platforms. A Challenger 350 or Citation XLS+ arrival requires careful weight planning and is subject to prevailing headwind conditions; payload restrictions apply on hot summer days with light tailwinds. Ultra-long-range aircraft are not compatible with this field. Operators should verify NOTAM status and confirm runway condition in advance during the winter off-season, when scheduled maintenance closures may affect availability. The elevation is negligible for performance calculations.

Ground handling at AOK is provided through dedicated general aviation handling — no independently branded FBO operation has been confirmed at this field. Customs are available on-site, which avoids the need for a prior-arrangement customs call that affects several other smaller Greek island airports. H24 operational status as filed should be verified directly with the handling agent for winter season arrivals, as traffic volumes drop sharply outside the June–September window and staffing patterns can affect after-hours availability. Catering, fuel (AVGAS and Jet-A1), and ground transportation to Pigadia or the northern villages can be arranged through the handling agent with sufficient lead time.
