Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport operates as the single point of international air entry into Nepal, processing diplomatic missions, expedition logistics, and a growing volume of UHNWI charter traffic bound for Himalayan trekking and luxury lodge circuits. Its location at 4,390 ft AMSL in the Bagmati Province valley is operationally consequential: density altitude effects are measurable on hot days, directly affecting climb performance and maximum payload for midsize and super-midsize jets. Dispatchers should factor field elevation into fuel planning and MTOW calculations on any summer departure.

Strategic Position

KTM sits approximately 6 km east of central Kathmandu, with road transfer time to Thamel or the diplomatic enclave of Lazimpat running 20–35 minutes depending on traffic — the Bagmati Bridge corridor is a known congestion point during peak hours. The airport is the only viable international entry point into Nepal; Pokhara Regional Airport (PKR) handles domestic turboprop traffic but lacks international customs clearance. For clients positioning from the Gulf, Dubai (DXB) operates as the primary hub for KTM connections, with multiple flag-carrier frequencies and private charter positioning options. For European routing, Istanbul (IST) and India-routed stops are common tech-stop configurations for ultra-long-range aircraft.

Fleet Compatibility

The main runway 02/20 measures 3,050 metres, which is formally sufficient for heavy-category operations including the Gulfstream G650 and Global 7500. However, elevation at 4,390 ft combined with mountainous terrain on the approach paths creates significant operational constraints. Instrument approaches are complex, with high terrain surrounding the valley requiring crew familiarity — operators unfamiliar with VNKT should confirm crew qualification and recency requirements before dispatch. The north and east quadrants feature terrain rising above 18,000 ft within 20 nm. Light-to-midsize jets such as the Phenom 300 and Citation CJ3+ are well within field performance margins but carry limited range out of KTM under full passenger load due to the elevation penalty.

FBO & Ground Ops

Tribhuvan does not operate a dedicated FBO facility in the Western sense. General aviation handling is coordinated through approved ground handlers including Himalayan Airlines Ground Services and similar Nepali-licensed operators — no international FBO brand (Signature, Jetex, Universal Aviation) maintains a permanent presence at VNKT. The international terminal processes private charter arrivals through a designated general aviation section, but the facility is shared and not a private ramp environment. Customs clearance is available on-site for international arrivals; however, services operate on a daytime schedule and are not available around the clock. H24 operations are not in effect — the airport observes curfew-adjacent restrictions with no scheduled operations during late-night hours, and PPR (prior permission required) is strongly recommended for any non-standard arrival window. Catering and crew accommodation are available in Kathmandu proper, with several five-star properties including the Dwarika's Hotel and Hyatt Regency Kathmandu within 15 minutes of the terminal. Fuel availability at VNKT should be confirmed in advance for ultra-long-range departures given occasional supply constraints at this high-altitude field. For operators routing through Delhi (DEL) or connecting onward to Nepal regional airstrips, slot coordination and overflight permits for Indian airspace require lead time of 48–72 hours minimum.
