Strategic Position

Saaremaa sits in the eastern Baltic Sea, roughly equidistant between Helsinki and Stockholm, with Riga approximately 280 km to the south. URE functions as a spoke off Tallinn, but for private charter it operates as a standalone destination field. The island's strategic Baltic position made it historically significant for defence logistics, and the airfield retains robust infrastructure relative to its size. Positioning flights typically route via Estonia's main hub at Tallinn (TLL), 200 km northeast.

Fleet Compatibility

The paved runway measures 1,800 metres, which accommodates the core light jet category — Phenom 300, Citation CJ3+, and the Pilatus PC-24 for short-field operations. Midsize jets including the Citation XLS+ can operate with standard payloads under normal ISA conditions at this near-sea-level elevation of 14 ft. Heavy jets and ultra-long-range types are not compatible with this field. For groups requiring a Challenger 350 or larger, the practical solution is positioning to Tallinn and ground-transferring by road (approximately 3 hours including the ferry) or helicopter. Summer operations draw light turboprop and light jet traffic supporting the island's peak leisure season from June through August.
