As of 2024, the field remains operationally active but under terminal transition planning, with jet traffic shifting progressively to alternatives and, within the LA basin, to Van Nuys (VNY), Burbank (BUR), and Long Beach (LGB).

Operational Profile

The Westside geography was SMO's defining operational advantage: the 405/10 interchange sits three minutes from the field perimeter. Beverly Hills is reachable in under 10 minutes by surface street in off-peak hours, making SMO faster than LAX for any drop point west of La Cienega Boulevard. Malibu is 20 minutes northbound on PCH. For clients based in Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, or the Platinum Triangle, SMO eliminated the 35–50 minute repositioning drive from Van Nuys. Customs and Border Protection services have been available at SMO on pre-arrangement basis — not walk-up clearance. International arrivals require APIS submission and CBP coordination in advance, typically 24–48 hours prior to landing. Given SMO's short runway and domestic-focused traffic profile, international arrivals represent a small fraction of operations; most cross-border traffic clears at LAX or routes via San Jose (SJC) for Pacific-origin flights. The field's operating hours are not H24: published hours run approximately 07:00–21:00 local, with after-hours operations requiring prior coordination and subject to noise ordinance enforcement. Late-evening departures are possible but must be filed carefully to avoid community noise complaints that trigger regulatory review. Operators considering SMO for 2025 or 2026 operations should confirm current operational status directly with the field, as the transition timeline has been subject to revision.
