Peenemünde occupies a singular position in European aviation geography: a small general aviation field on the northwestern tip of Usedom Island, flanked by the Peene estuary and the Baltic Sea, sitting on the same ground where the world's first operational ballistic missiles were developed and launched in the 1940s. For operators routing into the German Baltic coast — Greifswald, Rügen, Rügen Sound, or the Usedom resort corridor — PEF is the closest landable strip to the island's northern coastline. The nearest commercial alternatives are Hamburg (HAM) at approximately 250 km southwest, or Berlin via road transfer of roughly 220 km.

Access & Logistics

Usedom Island is accessible from the mainland via the Zecheriner Brücke and Wolgaster Brücke bridges, or by ferry. From PEF, Swinoujście (Poland) lies approximately 35 km east along the island. The German resort towns of Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck are within 40 km by road. Operators positioning into this field should coordinate ground transport well in advance — island infrastructure is seasonal and capacity-constrained in summer. No rail-to-ramp transfer exists. For crew requiring overnight accommodation, Usedom's spa towns offer options, but availability compresses sharply between June and August.

Airfield Capabilities

PEF is a light general aviation field. Published runway data indicates approximately 900–1,000 m of usable asphalt, which limits operations to piston aircraft, turboprops, and the smallest VLJ category (e.g., Cessna 172 class, Piper Malibu, PC-12 for short strips). The field elevation is negligible at 7 ft MSL. The database entry of 2,200 m runway with H24 operations, on-site customs, and premium FBO does not align with ground-truth data available for EDCP — those parameters appear to be default placeholder values. Operators should treat PEF as an uncontrolled VFR field with limited infrastructure.
