What is an empty leg flight?

An empty leg (or repositioning flight) is a private jet flying without passengers — typically returning to base or moving to pick up its next clients. Since the aircraft has to fly anyway, operators sell these segments at 50–75% below the standard charter price. Same aircraft, same crew, same service — a fraction of the cost.

The trade-off is flexibility: routes and dates are fixed by the original charter, and schedules can shift if the main booking changes. If your plans are flexible, empty legs are simply the cheapest way to fly private. Set an alert below and we will email you the moment a matching flight appears.

Reference Prices

What should an empty leg actually cost?

Every broker advertises a discount. Almost nobody publishes the price it is discounted from. Below is what a standard charter costs on 15 European corridors that structurally generate repositioning flights — so you can judge any empty leg offer you receive, including ours.

Read it this way: under half the light jet price, the offer is genuinely good. Above two thirds of it, a fixed schedule rarely justifies the saving.

Alpine corridors

December – March

Aircraft carry passengers up to the ski resorts and come back empty. Geneva and Zurich are the busiest repositioning points in Europe during the winter season.

Mediterranean corridors

June – September

The same mechanism, redirected south: jets fill up towards the islands and return empty. Nice, Milan, Palma and Ibiza produce most of the summer repositioning traffic.

Business hubs

All year round

Fleet bases — Le Bourget, Farnborough, Luton, Zurich — generate repositioning flights in both directions all year. Less seasonal, more frequent, and usually at shorter notice.

How these numbers are built

Charter prices are Flyius estimates for a full one-way charter, modelled from distance, block time and aircraft category. They are the same figures published on each route page — no page on this site contradicts another.

The empty leg range is not a Flyius measurement. Our supplier feed provides a one-way price but no reference price, so no discount can be computed on our side. What we show is the market band typically observed — 50% to 75% below charter — applied to the light jet price. We will replace it with measured discounts once European inventory carries reference prices.

The Mechanics

Where do empty leg flights come from?

Understanding this answers the question everyone actually has: why is there never an empty leg on the route I want, on the date I want?

1

The return to base

An aircraft based at one airport flies a client somewhere else, then has to come home. That return sector is flown empty whatever happens — selling it costs the operator almost nothing.

A jet based at Le Bourget drops a client in Nice on Friday evening and flies back to Paris empty.

2

The pre-positioning leg

The reverse case: the aircraft is not where the next client is. It flies out empty to collect them, and that outbound sector is the one available to you.

A jet finishing a charter in Milan flies empty to Geneva to start a booking there the next morning.

3

The seasonal imbalance

For a few weeks a year, traffic runs almost entirely one way. Every arrival creates a departure nobody wants to buy — which is exactly when empty legs are most abundant.

In February everyone flies into Geneva and Courchevel. In August, everyone flies into Ibiza and Olbia.

Empty legs are not created by demand. They are created by imbalance.

That is why you rarely find one on the exact route and date you want, and why the busiest corridors are not the ones producing the most empty legs. If you want a realistic chance of catching one, stay flexible on the airport and the day — or set an alert and let it come to you.

The Trade-Off

What does an empty leg cost you in flexibility?

The aircraft, the crew and the private terminal are identical to a full charter. What changes is control — and it changes a lot.

In short: an empty leg is excellent when your plans can bend around the flight. It is a poor idea when the flight has to bend around your plans.

  • The schedule is not yours

Departure time is set by the operator's original mission, not by you. Some will shift by an hour or two; most will not move at all.

  • It is one way, never a return

You will need a separate solution to get back — usually a scheduled flight, or a second empty leg that may not exist. Price the whole trip, not just the outbound.

  • It can be cancelled

If the paying charter that creates the repositioning changes or falls through, the empty leg disappears with it. You are refunded, but you still need a plan B.

  • Baggage is limited

The aircraft is already configured for its original mission. Skis, golf bags and oversized luggage frequently do not fit — confirm this before booking, not at the terminal.

  • The booking window is short

Most empty legs surface 24 to 72 hours before departure and are gone within hours. Refreshing a page is not a strategy; an alert is.

Understanding Empty Legs

Why is an empty leg cheaper than a normal charter?

When a private jet finishes a charter flight, it often needs to fly empty to its next mission or home base. Rather than flying without passengers, operators offer these empty-leg repositioning flights at heavily reduced rates — typically 50–75% below a comparable on-demand charter. You get the same certified aircraft, professional crew and VIP terminal access; the trade-off is a fixed route and departure window that cannot always be moved.

Empty legs work best when your dates and airports are flexible: London–Nice, Paris–Ibiza, Geneva–London and similar European corridors appear often as aircraft reposition between leisure and business peaks. Set an alert for your preferred city pair, compare live offers against a full charter quote on our pricing guide, and book in minutes when a matching one-way deal appears. Availability changes daily — what you see on this page is live inventory, not a static catalogue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Empty leg flights: your questions answered

Answers to your most common questions

Still have questions?

Our team is here to help

Contact us

What exactly is an empty leg flight?

An empty leg is a repositioning flight that a private jet must make without passengers, typically to pick up clients elsewhere or return to its base. Rather than flying empty, operators offer these flights at heavily discounted rates.

Why are the prices so low?

The flight has to happen anyway to reposition the aircraft. By accepting passengers, the operator recovers some of the costs. You benefit from a luxury flight at a fraction of the normal price.

Can I modify the route or schedule?

Empty legs have fixed routes and schedules. However, some operators accept slight modifications (departure from a nearby airport, for example). Contact our team to explore the possibilities.

How do I book an empty leg?

Browse our available offers and click 'Book Now'. Our team will contact you quickly to confirm availability and finalize your booking. Empty legs go fast, so act quickly!

What happens if the flight is cancelled?

Empty legs can be cancelled if the main charter flight changes. In this case, you'll receive a full refund. We recommend purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. The displayed price typically includes the flight, crew, and private terminal access. Additional fees may apply for premium catering or ground transportation, but these are always communicated before booking.

Where can I find empty leg flights from Zurich or Geneva?

Both are among the largest repositioning hubs in Europe, especially between December and March when traffic runs one way towards the Alps. Set an alert with Zurich or Geneva as your departure point: matching legs typically appear 24 to 72 hours ahead, and watching a listings page will not catch them in time.

Are there empty leg flights to the Swiss Alps?

Yes, and they are among the most common in Europe during the ski season — but almost always in the return direction. Aircraft fill up flying into Geneva, Sion and Courchevel, then leave empty. If you are travelling towards the Alps you will find fewer opportunities than on the way back.

How far in advance do empty legs appear?

Typically 24 to 72 hours before departure, once the paying charter that creates the repositioning is confirmed. A few surface a week ahead; almost none earlier than that. This is why alerts work and browsing does not.

Is an empty leg cheaper than a commercial business class ticket?

For one or two passengers, rarely. For a group of four to six travelling together on a European sector, often yes — the whole aircraft is priced, not the seat. Compare the empty leg price against the charter reference above, then divide by the number of passengers.

Set your alert before the next one appears
