Madrid's Oldest Active Airfield — Southwest Entry Point for Capital Region GA Traffic

Cuatro Vientos is not an alternative to Madrid Barajas — it operates in an entirely different category. Opened in 1911, it is Spain's oldest continuously operating airfield and functions exclusively as a general aviation and flight training hub on Madrid's southwestern fringe. There is no scheduled commercial traffic, no airline ground handling infrastructure, and no jet bridges. What it offers instead is uncongested ramp access, proximity to Madrid's residential and light-industrial southwest corridor, and a base for piston, turboprop, and light jet operations that do not require Barajas' slot coordination overhead.

Transfers & Connections

The airfield sits approximately 10 km southwest of Madrid's Puerta del Hierro and Moncloa districts, with road access via the A-5 (Autovía del Suroeste) and the M-40 ring road. Transfer time to Paseo de la Castellana — Madrid's primary business corridor — is typically 20–30 minutes outside peak hours, extending to 45+ minutes during morning rush. For destinations in the Pozuelo de Alarcón or Boadilla del Monte residential zones, Cuatro Vientos offers materially shorter ground transit than Barajas. For executive traffic requiring heavy or ultra-long-range lift (Global 7500, Gulfstream G650), Barajas remains the operational field. For Spain-wide routing of midsize jets, Barcelona El Prat and Palma de Mallorca offer significantly longer runways and full FBO infrastructure.

Handling & Customs

Cuatro Vientos is managed by AENA and hosts several resident flight schools and MRO operators — Real Aeroclub de España among them. Dedicated VIP or business aviation handling in the Signature/Jetex sense does not exist here; ground services are provided by the resident operators on a best-effort basis, oriented toward flight training and general aviation rather than executive charter. Customs availability listed as on-site should be treated as requiring advance coordination with Spanish border authorities (Guardia Civil), as the field does not maintain a permanent customs post comparable to Barajas or Palma. H24 operations are not confirmed for this field — published operating hours align with a daylight/controlled schedule typical of GA-only aerodromes in Spain; verify PPR and slot availability with the field manager before any international arrival.

VFR light-aircraft role

The current Spanish AIP states that Cuatro Vientos is available to light civil aircraft under VFR, with medium-wake civil aircraft requiring prior application and specific clearance. It is therefore unsuitable as the default airport for international or routine private-jet route pages. Flyius uses Madrid-Barajas for those missions unless a certified operator confirms another appropriate civil airport.
