St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport sits at an unusually compact geopolitical junction: Austria's Vorarlberg province is 8 km east, Germany's Baden-Württemberg begins across Lake Constance to the north, and the Swiss canton of St. Gallen surrounds the field on its landward sides. The Rhine delta separates the runway from open lake water by less than a kilometre, making approaches over the water a routine occurrence. For private jet operators, this position means that a single field services corporate demand from three countries simultaneously — a routing advantage rarely available at a field of this size.

Runway & Performance

The main runway at ACH measures approximately 1,322 metres, placing it firmly in the light-jet category. The Pilatus PC-12, Phenom 300, and Citation CJ3+ operate routinely from Altenrhein. Midsize jets — Citation XLS+, Learjet 75 — require careful payload and fuel calculations; full-fuel range with maximum pax is generally not achievable. Heavy cabin and long-range types are operationally incompatible with ACH. Field elevation is 1,306 ft above MSL, and given the proximity to the lake and typical ISA temperatures in the Rhine valley, density altitude effects are not a meaningful planning constraint for compatible aircraft types. Crews should note that the surrounding terrain — the Appenzell hills to the south and the Vorarlberg Alps to the east — requires attention to departure procedures, particularly in IMC conditions. IFR approaches are available via RNAV and ILS, and the field is instrument-capable year-round, though mountain weather can generate rapid condition changes between early autumn and spring.

Ground Handling

People's Viennaline, the scheduled carrier that links ACH to Vienna, also anchors GA handling operations at the airport. Dedicated general aviation handling with VIP lounge access, direct ramp parking, and catering coordination is available. Customs clearance is on-site and operational during published airport hours — ACH does not hold H24 status, and the field operates broadly on daylight-plus hours. Out-of-hours arrivals require advance coordination with Swiss customs and are subject to overtime fees. Handling quality at Altenrhein is rated premium relative to its size: the terminal is compact but private, and throughput volumes remain low enough to guarantee genuine exclusivity on the ramp. Overflight and landing permits for Swiss airspace are standard EU/bilateral arrangements for most European registrations; non-EU operators should verify permit requirements at least 48 hours prior.

Regional Access

St. Gallen city centre is approximately 20 minutes by road via the A1 motorway. Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse and financial district are reachable in under 60 minutes via the A1-A3 corridor, making ACH a viable alternative to Zurich Airport (ZRH) for clients whose final destination is eastern Switzerland, the Rhine Valley, or Austrian Vorarlberg. For the Bodensee region specifically — Bregenz, Konstanz, Lindau — ACH eliminates the 90-minute transfer that an arrival into Munich (MUC) would require. The city of St. Gallen hosts several major textile and apparel holding companies as well as a number of private wealth management operations, and the University of St. Gallen (HSG) generates recurring executive traffic during academic forums. Liechtenstein, 25 km to the south, is the closest sovereign jurisdiction with no commercial airport of its own; Altenrhein serves as the de facto aviation gateway for Vaduz and the principality's financial sector. For broader Switzerland access or when aircraft type requirements exceed ACH's runway limitations, Geneva (GVA) and Zurich (ZRH) remain the principal Swiss alternates.
