About the Gulfstream Gulfstream III
The Gulfstream III arrived in 1980 with the feature that would define a generation of large jets — winglets. Stretching and refining the GII, Gulfstream added those upswept tips to a new wing, and the result was the first business jet most people could pick out of a line-up by silhouette alone. Behind a pair of Rolls-Royce Spey 511 turbofans it crossed the Atlantic non-stop with 9 passengers (up to 10), reaching 7,408 km at 941 km/h. Through the 1980s it was the aircraft heads of state, corporations and even NASA chose when the mission was long and the arrival had to register — the analog-era flagship that set the transatlantic standard.
Performance Excellence
Two crew take the Gulfstream III across 7,408 km / 4,000 nm at up to 941 km/h (508 ktas) on Rolls-Royce Spey power. Around 10 remain in European charter service at roughly €9,000 per hour. By modern metrics the Speys drink fuel and the avionics are of their era, but the GIII's place is fixed: the winglet pioneer and 1980s transatlantic benchmark whose wing and cabin set Gulfstream on the path to the G-IV, G-V and everything after.
Cabin Comfort
The GIII brought airliner proportions to private aviation: a 13.0 m cabin, 2.24 m wide and 1.88 m tall, where passengers stand fully upright and move between distinct zones rather than rows. That volume — vast for 1980 — let it carry nine in a forward club, a mid conference group and an aft three-seat divan with room left for a full galley and crew rest on the longest legs. The Spey engines are not quiet by modern standards, but the cabin's sheer space made it the most comfortable way to fly the Atlantic for a decade. It is the jet that taught the wider world what a Gulfstream cabin felt like.
High-speed WiFi keeps you connected throughout your flight, allowing you to work or stay in touch. A full galley enables fresh catering service during your journey. A private lavatory ensures comfort on longer flights.
