Colonsay is a small island in the Inner Hebrides with a population under 150. The airstrip is the only rapid access point outside the CalMac ferry service from Oban, which runs infrequently. Operational Profile

Colonsay Airstrip (EGEY) operates a grass runway of approximately 533 metres, suitable only for very light single- and twin-engine piston aircraft — think Cessna 172, Islander, or similar STOL types. The strip is restricted to VFR daylight operations. There are no instrument approaches, no lighting, and no IFR capability. Ultra-light jets such as the Phenom 100 or Citation Mustang cannot operate here due to runway length and surface constraints. Any private jet charter to Colonsay requires a stop at a mainland field — typically Glasgow or Edinburgh — with onward transfer by light aircraft or helicopter.

Transfers & Connections

The airstrip sits in the north of the island, roughly 3 km from the village of Scalasaig where the ferry pier and the island's only hotel (The Colonsay) are located. There is no taxi infrastructure; ground transfer must be pre-arranged with the island's limited vehicle hire options. Helicopter landing on the island is feasible with landowner permission and prior arrangement. Loganair historically operated scheduled services from Glasgow on a seasonal basis — confirm current availability before planning any itinerary.

Handling & Customs

There is no FBO, no dedicated GA terminal, and no customs facility at Colonsay. International arrivals and departures requiring customs clearance must be processed at a designated port of entry on the mainland — Glasgow, Edinburgh, or EDI — before or after the island leg. Operations are not H24; the strip is unlit and closed at night. Fuel is not available on-site. Any handling coordination for the island leg must be arranged through the mainland handling agent.
