Operational Profile

ILY operates under published daylight hours only — no night operations, no exceptions. The primary runway is approximately 1,253 metres of sealed surface, which limits the fleet envelope to light jets and turboprops: Pilatus PC-12, King Air 350, Phenom 300, and Citation CJ3 operate routinely. Larger midsize jets are not compatible with the declared distances available. Field elevation is 56 ft AMSL; density altitude is not a planning factor. Atlantic crosswinds are the primary weather variable — westerly gusts above 25 knots are frequent between October and March, and positioning should account for alternate diversion planning to Glasgow or Prestwick (PIK).

Transfers & Connections

The airport sits approximately 5 km northeast of Bowmore, the island's main village, with road transfer to Port Ellen in the south taking around 25 minutes. There is no scheduled rail or ferry connection from the terminal. Car hire is available on-site from local operators, though advance booking is essential outside peak distillery season (April–October). Helicopter positioning from the mainland is an operational alternative for groups requiring flexibility on return timing.

Handling & Customs

Customs clearance at ILY is available by prior arrangement — operators must request this in advance and cannot assume walk-up clearance. The handling facility is operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), which manages the ground operation across its network of Scottish island aerodromes. There is no dedicated FBO in the conventional sense; the terminal provides basic crew and passenger services. Fuel (AVGAS and Jet A-1) is available, but advance notice is recommended for large uplifts. For United Kingdom domestic positioning, PPR is advisable given the limited apron capacity and the preference of the single handling agent for pre-notified arrivals. International arrivals require customs pre-coordination — confirm with the Border Force contact at least 24 hours prior to block-in.
