About the IAI IAI Astra
By the mid-1980s Israel Aircraft Industries had learned the business jet trade and wanted a design that owed nothing to anyone else's drawing board. The Astra, introduced in 1985, was that aircraft — a clean-sheet midsize built around a new swept, supercritical wing carried low through the fuselage rather than across the cabin. The payoff was speed: a 980 km/h cruise that ran with the quickest midsize jets of the era, and the aerodynamic efficiency to reach 3,749 km. Seating 8 (up to 9), it was the design that proved IAI could engineer a competitive jet from scratch — and the airframe Gulfstream would later adopt as the G100 and G150.
Performance Excellence
Two crew fly the Astra over 3,749 km / 2,024 nm at up to 980 km/h (529 ktas) — genuinely fast for a 1980s midsize. Around 10 remain in European charter at roughly €4,500 per hour. It is the technical turning point in IAI's story: the clean-sheet swept-wing design whose speed and efficiency carried straight through into the Gulfstream-badged G100 and G150 that followed.
Cabin Comfort
The Astra's defining trick is invisible from a seat: by routing its wing spar beneath the cabin instead of through it, IAI gave an otherwise compact midsize a completely flat, unbroken floor over its 5.03 m length. At 1.75 m tall the cabin stands taller than its 1.52 m width suggests, and eight passengers sit in a club-and-pairs layout without the raised wing box that interrupts so many rivals. It is an engineer's cabin — modest in width, clever in packaging, and quiet enough at speed that the Astra's pace never announces itself inside.
