Sevastopol's Belbek Airfield: Crimea's Contested Military Strip Under Active Conflict

Belbek Airport — designated UKS and located approximately 12 km north of Sevastopol city centre — is a former dual-use military and civil airfield on the Crimean Peninsula. Since Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Belbek has functioned exclusively as a Russian military installation. The airfield has been subject to repeated strikes and counter-battery operations throughout the conflict. Civil aviation operations are entirely suspended, and Crimean airspace is closed to all non-military traffic.

Operational Profile

The runway at Belbek extends approximately 2,200 metres and was historically capable of handling aircraft up to the midsize category, including Soviet-era regional jets and light turboprops serving Sevastopol before commercial service was terminated. UKFB is not listed in current EUROCONTROL or ICAO civil AIP publications for operational civil use. No FBO services, executive handling, customs clearance, or ground support are available to private or commercial civil operators under present conditions. Any flight plan referencing UKFB would be rejected by Ukrainian, EU, and most international ATC authorities.

Transfers & Connections

Under pre-2014 conditions, Belbek provided access to Sevastopol and the wider Crimean Peninsula, with road transit to Yalta running approximately 80 km via the M18 coastal highway. Those routing considerations are operationally irrelevant while the conflict persists. Clients requiring access to southern Ukraine should monitor the status of Ukraine's western airfields, with pre-war alternatives including Odesa and Kherson remaining partially or fully disrupted. For Black Sea regional routing, operators historically used Istanbul as the primary hub; Istanbul (IST) remains the most viable gateway for the broader region. Routing via Athens (ATH) is also used for western Black Sea access.

Handling & Customs

No customs, FBO, or executive handling infrastructure is accessible at Belbek under current conditions. The airport's pre-conflict handling capabilities are not relevant to dispatch planning. Operators should treat UKFB as a closed, military-controlled facility in an active conflict zone. Overflying Crimean airspace is prohibited under EASA conflict zone bulletins and most state operator guidance. Any routing within 100 nm of UKFB should be assessed against current NOTAMs and national authority advisories before flight plan submission.
