Simferopol International Airport has been non-operational for international civilian charter traffic since March 2014, following the Russian military occupation of Crimea. The airport's ICAO designator UKFF falls under Ukrainian airspace authority, but physical control has been exercised by Russian forces since the annexation. Flight operations from SIP were initially maintained under Russian domestic routing, primarily serving Moscow-area airports, but were severely disrupted following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and subsequent closure of Russian airspace to EU and most Western operators.
Prior to 2014, Simferopol served as the primary gateway to the Crimean Peninsula, connecting Kyiv, Istanbul, and key European hubs. Ground transfer to Simferopol city centre was approximately 15 minutes via the M18 highway. Connections to Yalta and Sevastopol were served by road transfers of 80–90 km. None of these transfer routes are accessible to Western-registered or Western-operated charter aircraft under current conditions.
Any FBO or handling infrastructure previously available at SIP — including facilities modernised ahead of the 2014 season — cannot be engaged by operators subject to EU Council Regulation 269/2014, OFAC SDN restrictions, or UK sanctions on Crimea. Customs clearance through SIP is not recognised by Ukrainian authorities, the EU, or ICAO member states operating under standard bilateral air service agreements. Operators considering any routing through SIP should obtain legal counsel before filing. No FBO operating under IATA or EBAA frameworks is currently active at this field. Links to nearby operational alternatives: Prague and Budapest remain the closest usable hubs for Eastern European executive routing, while Istanbul historically served as the primary hub for Black Sea region charters. For broader regional context, see Ukraine. Access to Athens covers alternative eastern Mediterranean staging.
