Zhytomyr in Wartime: Why ZTR Is Off the Charter Network

Zhytomyr Airport (ICAO: UKKV), located approximately 140 km west of Kyiv in Zhytomyr Oblast, has been closed to civil aviation since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukrainian airspace (UIR Kyiv) remains subject to a NOTAM-based closure for all civil and commercial air traffic, enforced continuously since the outbreak of hostilities. Published runway data for UKKV indicates a primary strip in the range of 2,500 metres, sufficient for midsize to super-midsize aircraft under normal ISA conditions. Field elevation is approximately 236 metres (774 ft) AMSL, giving negligible performance penalty for jet operations under standard temperatures. However, runway condition, lighting systems, and navigational aids have not been independently verified since the onset of the conflict and must be considered unknown for planning purposes.
