About the Bombardier Challenger 600
Before there was a Challenger family, a Global family or a CRJ airliner, there was one radical idea: a business jet wide enough to walk through. Bill Lear sketched it as the LearStar 600; Canadair took it on in Montreal and first flew it in 1978 as the Challenger 600, wrapping a NASA supercritical wing around a fuselage so broad it broke with everything the era's narrow tube-jets offered. Powered by Lycoming ALF502 turbofans, it carries 12 passengers (up to 14) over 3,459 km at 943 km/h. Its range was modest by today's measure, but its cross-section started a dynasty — every wide-cabin Bombardier flying traces back to this airframe.
Performance Excellence
Two crew operate the Challenger 600 across 3,459 km / 1,868 nm at up to 943 km/h (509 ktas). Around 8 remain in European charter service — a small, historically significant fleet at roughly €7,500 per hour. The numbers are those of a 1978 heavy jet, but its place is singular: the Lycoming-powered original that proved a business jet could be a wide-body, and set the template Bombardier has built on for four decades.
Cabin Comfort
The whole point of the 600 was width, and it remains startling for a 1978 design: 2.49 m across and 1.85 m tall, a cabin you stand up in and walk down a real aisle, stretched over 8.66 m. That gives twelve passengers a genuine three-zone layout — facing clubs, a conference grouping, a relaxed aft — rather than the single row of swivel chairs its contemporaries offered. The flat floor and near-six-foot ceiling were unheard of in business aviation when it launched. It is the cabin that taught the industry what "wide-body" could mean.
High-speed WiFi keeps you connected throughout your flight, allowing you to work or stay in touch. A full galley enables fresh catering service during your journey. A private lavatory ensures comfort on longer flights.
