About the Bombardier Challenger 601-3R

The early Challengers had always faced the heavy-jet trade-off — fill the cabin or fill the tanks. The 601-3R, introduced in 1987 alongside the -3A, attacked that compromise directly. Bombardier added a ventral fuel tank under the rear fuselage and raised the maximum takeoff weight, so the aircraft could carry a full passenger load and the fuel to fly it a long way at the same time. Range with payload reached 4,032 km at 920 km/h. It carries 12 passengers (up to 14), with around 18 in European charter. Where the base 601 and the -3A asked operators to manage the payload-range curve carefully, the -3R simply gave them more margin — the early Challenger with the fewest mission compromises.

Performance Excellence

Two crew operate the -3R across 4,032 km / 2,180 nm with payload at up to 920 km/h (497 ktas), the ventral tank and raised MTOW giving it the margin to carry seats and fuel together. Around 18 examples serve European charter at roughly €8,000 per hour. It trades a little cruise speed for that flexibility, and the bargain is a sound one: of the early Challengers, the -3R is the one least likely to leave a passenger or a bag behind to make the range.

Cabin Comfort

The -3R's cabin is the familiar Challenger wide tube — 8.66 m long, 2.49 m wide, 1.85 m tall — but the variant earns its character on the long sectors the extra fuel unlocks. On a four- or five-hour leg the aft three-place divan becomes somewhere to genuinely stretch out, the wide aisle lets passengers move around without disturbing each other, and the full galley supports a real meal rather than a snack run. The cross-section that feels generous on a short hop feels essential on a long one, and the -3R is the early Challenger most likely to be flying those longer legs. Twelve seats, forward club to aft divan, with the proportions to make distance comfortable.

High-speed WiFi keeps you connected throughout your flight, allowing you to work or stay in touch. A full galley enables fresh catering service during your journey. A private lavatory ensures comfort on longer flights.
