The original Challenger 600 had the cabin right and the engines wrong — Avco Lycoming ALF502 turbofans that left the wide airframe heavy and short-legged. In 1984 Bombardier's predecessor Canadair fixed both problems at once with the 601: General Electric CF34 turbofans, which had the thrust and the efficiency the design always needed, and the winglets that became the Challenger's visual signature.
