About the Bombardier Challenger 601

The original Challenger 600 had the cabin right and the engines wrong — Avco Lycoming ALF502 turbofans that left the wide airframe heavy and short-legged. In 1984 Bombardier's predecessor Canadair fixed both problems at once with the 601: General Electric CF34 turbofans, which had the thrust and the efficiency the design always needed, and the winglets that became the Challenger's visual signature. The aerodynamic gain was real — range climbed to 3,874 km at 1,015 km/h — and the airframe suddenly made sense. It carries 12 passengers (up to 14). Around 15 serve European charter. This is the aircraft that vindicated the wide-tube concept and seeded every Challenger and Global that followed.

Performance Excellence

Two crew take the 601 across 3,874 km / 2,090 nm at up to 1,015 km/h (548 ktas) on the GE CF34 turbofans that defined it. Around 15 examples serve European charter at roughly €7,800 per hour — the most affordable way into the Challenger wide cabin. Newer 604s and 605s have the longer legs, but the 601 offers the same defining cross-section at a price a generation kinder, and it is the airframe where the whole Challenger story properly begins.

Cabin Comfort

The 601 introduced the cross-section that would define Bombardier business jets for forty years: 8.66 m long, 2.49 m wide, 1.85 m tall — a near-circular wide tube that gave passengers more shoulder room than any rival of its generation. Twelve seats arrange into a forward club and aft conference with a full galley and enclosed lavatory. What strikes you stepping aboard a 601 today is how modern the width still feels: the cabin was conceived a decade ahead of its rivals, and the proportions have aged into a kind of timelessness. The CF34 re-engine also made it quieter than the original 600 at cruise — the cabin that started the dynasty, in its first fully-realised form.

High-speed WiFi keeps you connected throughout your flight, allowing you to work or stay in touch. A full galley enables fresh catering service during your journey. A private lavatory ensures comfort on longer flights.
