The Gulfstream G-IV had already redefined the large-cabin business jet when Gulfstream introduced the G-IVSP — for Special Performance — in 1992. The structural changes were modest; the operational ones were substantial. Gulfstream raised the maximum takeoff weight by some 2,900 lb, allowing the airframe to carry significantly more fuel, and certified higher altitudes and improved hot-and-high performance. Range climbed to 7,778 km without changing the wing or engines. It carries 12 passengers (up to 14) at 1,039 km/h. Through the 1990s the SP became the default G-IV, and many earlier G-IVs were retrofitted to SP standards — the variant that owned the era.

Performance Excellence

Two crew take the G-IVSP across 7,778 km / 4,200 nm at up to 1,039 km/h (561 ktas), with the higher MTOW translating directly into the extra fuel that earns the longer range. Around 35 serve European charter at roughly €10,500 per hour. The G650 has long since taken the records, but for value the SP is the heavy charter sweet spot: the G-IV cabin with the legs to use it, at numbers a generation kinder than current Gulfstreams.
