Davos occupies a unique position in the global private aviation hierarchy: it is the most event-driven jet destination in the world, compressed into a specific week in January that produces extraordinary operational pressure across three Swiss airports simultaneously. The World Economic Forum draws a delegate profile — heads of state, central bank governors, Fortune 500 CEOs — for whom private aviation is not a preference but a security requirement. During WEF week, Samedan, Zurich, and occasionally Milan Malpensa see a concentration of repositioning flights and high-priority arrivals unmatched anywhere in the Alps.

Airports and ground access

The operational foundation is Engadin Airport Samedan (SMV/LSZS), the closest airfield at approximately 40 km south of Davos. At 1,707 metres above sea level — the highest commercial airport in Europe — Samedan imposes strict performance requirements. Density altitude reduces maximum takeoff weight for most jet types by 10–15% in summer. Turboprops and light jets handle the field well with appropriate planning; midsize jets require validation, and heavy iron typically positions into Zurich ZRH with a 1h45 road transfer or a 25-minute helicopter connection completing the mission.

During WEF, PPR at Samedan is mandatory, parking is pre-allocated weeks in advance, and departure sequencing can add 30–60 minutes to planned block-out times. Road transfer from Samedan to Davos Platz runs 45–60 minutes. The Flüelapass route may close in heavy snow, making the Julierpass–Landwasser corridor the reliable winter alternative. Helicopter transfer from Zurich Heliport to Davos-approved landing pads — approximately 25 minutes block-to-pad — eliminates road logistics entirely and is the preferred solution for security-sensitive delegates.

Seasonality and demand

Year-round, Davos generates consistent demand beyond WEF. The Swiss Medical Forum, European Outdoor Summit, and a dense calendar of dermatology and respiratory research conferences sustain traffic across the calendar. Winter ski infrastructure — among Europe's finest for off-piste — adds leisure demand from November through April, with WEF week defining the peak within that window.
